STORY

In the ever-evolving landscape of indie game development, a critical question led me to embark on a project aimed at addressing the unmet needs of indie game companies, studios, and developers. The fundamental question that drove this endeavor was: What role can design play in solving the challenges faced by indie game developers, particularly in finding publishers and obtaining valuable feedback from gamers?

MY ROLE

The beginning of this project emerged from a critical inquiry into the unmet needs of Indie game companies, studios, and developers. My role extended from the conceptualization phase to the execution of the design for a platform aimed at addressing the challenges faced by indie game developers.

USER RESEARCH

I conducted extensive user research and interviews to unearth the nuanced challenges faced by indie game entities. This phase served as the foundation for identifying key priorities such as finding publishers and engaging gamers/testers. The insights garnered from gamedeveloper.com, industry leaders like Akupara Games, and indie game developers themselves informed the subsequent design decisions.

UX DESIGN

Leveraging the research findings, I led the charge in crafting a user experience that streamlined the intricate processes of finding publishers, obtaining gamer feedback, and enhancing the overall development journey for indie game studios. The UX design aimed to create an intuitive platform where publishers, gamers, and indie game developers could seamlessly connect.

VISUAL DESIGN

Translating conceptual ideas into visually compelling interfaces, I applied a strategic visual design approach to ensure the platform's aesthetic appeal. The visual design not only aimed at providing an engaging user interface but also conveyed the collaborative spirit of the gaming community envisioned in the project.

PROTOTYPING

To bring the design to life, I engaged in prototyping activities that allowed for the validation of user flows and interactions. Prototypes served as a tangible representation of the envisioned platform, enabling iterative refinements based on validation sessions, user feedback, and continuous improvement.

Research

Based on my research and interviews, it has become clear that the top priorities for indie game companies, studios, and developers are finding publishers who can provide funding and marketing for their games, as well as finding gamers/testers to play and provide feedback on their games.

Akupara Games, a prominent indie game publisher, has provided noteworthy insights into the process of how indie game developers can successfully secure publishers. According to Akupara, indie game developers can find publishers through a variety of means, including conducting research by speaking with experienced developers who have worked with publishers, utilizing online resources such as Reddit or Wikipedia, or researching the portfolios of publishers. Another effective approach is to attend industry events, conferences, or campaigns to network and establish connections with potential publishers. [ 2 ] [ 3 ]

This is one of the major challenges that indie game developers face which is the lengthy process of finding the right publisher, as it involves extensive research and analysis of the market, funding requirements, and publisher preferences. This process can take weeks, if not months, and requires persistent efforts to gain traction. [ 2 ] [ 3 ]

An additional unaddressed challenge for indie game developers is obtaining adequate game testing and feedback from potential gamers. In interviews conducted with indie game developers, it was observed that the challenge of receiving feedback and game testing from gamers is a common obstacle that they face.

interview insights

Indie game developers face challenges in finding willing and reliable testers for their games. Interviews with developers have revealed that traditional channels such as events, conferences, and social media platforms like Reddit and Twitter are often used to recruit testers. However, these methods can be time-consuming and may not yield enough testers. Some developers have also tried free or paid testing sites but found them to be ineffective. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ]

Testing the game with actual players is a crucial aspect of ensuring its usability and effectiveness. It enables game developers to identify pain points and determine whether players can grasp the gameplay mechanics. [ 7 ]

As part of my research, I sought to understand the needs of game publishers in the current market. Based on my findings from various sources and interviews, the primary need for game publishers is to discover and invest in projects that have the potential to become the next big thing in the gaming industry.

In my research and interviews, I have discovered that the role of game publishers is multi-faceted. Not only do they publish and market games, but they also play a crucial role in investing in projects and game developers. Additionally, they are responsible for project management, which involves understanding the game development process from start to finish, planning and organizing tasks, and ensuring that the project stays within the budget. To excel in these areas, publishers require a deep understanding of the game industry, rights and licensing, and excellent communication skills to effectively tell the story and worth of a game to clients. Game publishers have an unmet need to identify potential hit games that generate buzz among gamers and capture their interest. This can be accomplished through various channels, including monitoring hype and excitement around games at events and identifying interesting projects that are generating buzz among gamers. By understanding what gamers want, publishers can make informed decisions on which games to invest in and market, ultimately leading to greater success and profitability.

Problem statement

Indie game studios face formidable obstacles in the endeavor to secure publishers and capture their attention, a process marked by inherent complexities and time-consuming efforts. Additionally, the sustained development of games becomes a formidable challenge, given the scarcity of gamers willing to engage with and provide feedback on their creations. This scarcity further compounds the intricate landscape of indie game development, necessitating strategic solutions to enhance visibility and collaboration within the industry.

UNMET NEEDS

INDIE GAME STUDIO

The foremost challenge facing indie game developers lies in the acquisition of financial resources and effective marketing for their games, a process commonly referred to as finding suitable publishers. A secondary challenge emerges in the form of securing a dedicated user base for testing and feedback, thereby addressing the imperative of attracting gamers to explore and evaluate their gaming creations.

Publishers

Publishers' primary unmet need revolves around identifying projects that possess the potential to become groundbreaking within the gaming industry, setting the stage for the next significant advancement or success.

How do solve these problem?

Our aspiration for this platform is to empower indie game studios in seamlessly connecting with publishers and gamers. Rather than simply offering another gaming platform, our focus is on creating an environment where publishers, gamers, and indie game studios coexist. By fostering a thriving community, we aim to address the challenges faced by indie game companies in finding both a dedicated player base and potential publishers.

Our vision is to cultivate a platform that not only attracts gamers but also aligns with the unmet needs of publishers. We recognize that the more engaged and diverse the gamer community becomes, the higher the likelihood of meeting the specific requirements of publishers. By envisioning a collaborative space that brings together all stakeholders in the gaming industry, we aim to revolutionize the way indie game studios navigate the intricate landscape of finding publishers and gaining gamer attention.

DESIGN GOAL

Empower indie game studios to establish a thriving community and enhance game development by creating a dynamic platform where publishers, gamers, and indie game studios converge. This will facilitate the streamlined discovery of publishers or attract them to the indie game projects within the platform. The goal is to cultivate an environment where gamers actively contribute to the growth of indie games by providing valuable feedback and engagement. Simultaneously, the platform aims to cater to publishers' needs by helping them identify and invest in the next breakthrough within the indie gaming landscape.
